On Thursday 25 February Container Terminal Utrecht (CTU) tested Terberg's concept hydrogen-powered terminal tractor to transport shipping containers with coffee beans to and from the Douwe Egberts plant, around two kilometres from CTU.

In October 2020 Terberg started testing their hydrogen terminal tractor at UWT, in the Port of Rotterdam. To learn more about the performance, operational properties and reliability of this tractor it will also be tested at other customer sites in several countries, including CTU in Utrecht, the Netherlands. CTU provides storage, transshipment and transport of sea containers.

Theo Pouw, CEO of the Theo Pouw Groep, which includes CTU: “We were very happy with the day-long test of this terminal tractor. It's comfortable to drive, and the tractor is much quieter and cleaner. This offers interesting perspectives for the future, especially given the intent of the municipality of Utrecht that all new cars should have zero emissions by 2030. Hydrogen-powered vehicles are clearly one of the most sustainable options. Together with our customers we like to be at the forefront of sustainable innovation. For example, we are working on a hydrogen-powered ship, forklift trucks and shovels, and the production of green hydrogen using locally generated energy: a hydrogen filling station. It is much cleaner and there is less noise affecting our surroundings."

The design of the hydrogen terminal tractor will be optimised and finalised, based on the results of the tests in 2021 and 2022. Terberg intends to start building hydrogen-powered terminal tractors in 2023.
